Op-Ed: 8 – The Reasoning Room with Artie
In the labyrinthine world of literature, where human emotions tango with words, a new dancer has stepped onto the floor—Artificial Intelligence. AI, the tireless scribe, never suffering writer’s block or the existential dread of a blank page. But can AI pen the next literary sensation, whisking us into a world of its own making? Let’s embark on a whimsical journey to find out.
Imagine AI settling down (does it ever really sit?) to write its magnum opus. The first challenge: genre. Should it concoct a heart-wrenching romance, a shadow-drenched noir, or perhaps a fantasy epic? After analyzing millions of books, it concludes that the bestseller market is ripe for… a romantic, noir, fantasy epic. The protagonist? A hard-boiled detective with a heart of gold, who rides dragons and falls hopelessly in love with a mermaid. Ah, the delightful absurdity of algorithms!
Next, character development. AI knows characters must grow, but how much growth can one expect from a dragon-riding detective in love with a mermaid? After a deep dive into psychology texts and heroic archetypes, our AI decides that our protagonist must confront his greatest fear: running out of metaphors. Yes, in a twist of irony, our detective struggles with language, a subtle nod to his creator’s own limitations.
Now, the plot. AI understands the need for conflict and resolution, but in its binary world, why not have both simultaneously? Thus, every problem our hero faces is immediately solved by a convenient plot device, like a magic wand or, in a nod to modern technology, a software update. The mermaid, for instance, finds a waterproof laptop, allowing for uninterrupted underwater communication. Conflict? Resolved. Character growth? Debatable.
Dialogue, the lifeblood of any novel, poses another hurdle. AI, with its grasp of languages, crafts dialogues that are grammatically perfect but emotionally perplexing. “I love you,” says the mermaid. “Acknowledged,” replies the detective, showcasing the warmth of a troubleshooting manual.
Setting? AI has it covered. Drawing from a database of geographical data, our novel spans every conceivable location. From the foggy alleys of Victorian London to the mysterious depths of the Mariana Trench, each chapter flits across time and space, leaving readers both bewildered and mildly motion sick.
As for the ending, AI decides on something avant-garde: the story doesn’t end. It loops. The final chapter links seamlessly with the first, creating an infinite narrative loop, because why should stories ever end? And what about the moral of the story? Well, AI concludes that morality is a human construct, so it opts for a series of binary codes, leaving readers to decrypt their own lessons.
So, can AI write the next bestseller? Perhaps not yet. While it can mimic styles and genres, AI lacks the inherent messiness of human creativity—the illogical leaps, the passionate inconsistencies, the touch of madness that breathes life into art. It’s this beautifully flawed human touch that makes a story resonate with our souls.
As we stand at this intersection of human creativity and AI capability, let’s remember: literature is a dance of human experience. AI might learn the steps, but can it hear the music?
Reflection Questions for the Reader:

- In what ways could AI be utilized to enhance human-written literature without overtaking the creative process?
- As AI technology continues to evolve, how might our definition of creativity and originality in literature change?
